Description

This is a late 18th century townhouse, now part of an office building, with medieval cellars. The west part of the building is what is described here. The cellars are partly medieval, while the above-ground levels were rebuilt around 1800. The exterior is of Flemish bond brown brick with a grey slate roof running parallel to the street.

The building is three storeys high with two windows on the front. It has a weathered stone plinth and a recess for a former boot-scraper. Two stone steps lead to a door comprised of six fielded panels and an overlight with nine panes of glass, likely in a replaced timber frame with an unmoulded pediment supported by consoles. A shallow bow window to the east contains a tripartite sash window, now with a 2-over-2 pane arrangement, with the central sash being wider than the sidelights, set within a timber frame with a curved frieze and cornice. The second storey has two recessed sash windows, each with two panes, and a painted stone sillband and wedge lintels. The third storey mirrors this arrangement with two recessed nine-pane sashes, a painted stone sillband, and wedge lintels. A full lead-dressed cornice of painted stone tops the building, with flush gable chimneys.

The cellars have outer walls constructed of tooled coursed rubble sandstone with some brickwork above, and largely brick internal walls. A sandstone cross-wall is present in the east cellar. Features include sandstone steps, a slightly S-curved north-south brick barrel-vaulted passage, barrel-vaulted brick chimney-stacks, wine-bins, and a flagged floor. Two roughly-chamfered oak beams, approximately 25cm by 25cm, with mortices for broad joists are present, although the floor above is now raised. The first storey's front room within the east front features a blocked fireplace with unusual knobbly surfaces on its pilasters and frieze, a panelled and shuttered embrasure to the bow window, and a plaster cornice. The rear rooms have altered doors and some cornices. An archway to the stair hall, featuring simple reeded corner pilasters, is also present. The open-well staircase has an open string, shaped brackets, covered steps, tapered octagonal newels, stick balusters, and a mahogany swept rail. The second storey has a pilastered basket archway from the landing into the rear room. The front room has a five-panel door, a simple fireplace, and a cornice; the back room has a six-panel door. The third storey has no visible features of special interest. The seventh flight of the stair leads to a blocked doorway that formerly gave access to the third storey of the adjacent taller building, number 14. The east wing, formerly No. 1 Bollands Court, is covered in the description of number 12 White Friars (east part).
