Description
The statue of Queen Victoria is located on a pedestal opposite the portico of the Assize Courts in Chester. It was created by sculptor F.W. Pomeroy and is dated 1903. The statue is made of bronze and stands on an ashlar plinth designed by Harry Beswick. The square base features two steps and a moulded plinth inscribed with a dedication that reads: "THIS STATUE WAS ERECTED IN HONOUR OF / A GOOD AND BELOVED QUEEN / AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF HER LONG AND GRACIOUS REIGN / BY HER MAJESTY'S LOYAL SUBJECTS / IN THE COUNTY AND CITY OF CHESTER / AD 1903." The front of the base displays the Royal coat of arms, while the Chester City and Earl of Chester's Arms are positioned on the left and right sides, respectively, with the cypher V.R. intertwined at the rear. Above the base is a cornice. The statue depicts Queen Victoria in her coronation robes, holding an orb and sceptre, adorned with a lace head-dress and an Imperial crown.
