Description

Poplar Cottage is a cottage dating to the later 17th century, with later 20th-century internal alterations and additions. It is constructed with brick nogging on a stone base, has a thatched roof, and a central brick chimney. The cottage is one-and-a-half storeys high, with a three-bay front. The front features 15 irregular small frames and angle bracing. The end bays have iron casements with leaded lights below, and lunettes with small panes above. Originally a two-room baffle-entry house, the front now presents as a two-storey, three-bay facade. The end bays contain blocked window openings below, with lunettes and rectangular leaded glazing above, swept over by the thatch. A centrally placed door is set within a wooden frame. The right gable end displays a toothed tiebeam with pairs of diagonal struts, and a collar with diagonal struts. A long, lower brick extension has been added to the left, and a modern extension is to the rear. The interior features quarter-round ceiling beams in the two main rooms, and tie beam trusses with braced through purlins. The group value of the building stems from its contribution to the historic character of the area.
