Description

The Methodist church, dated 1878 and possibly designed by Edmund Kirby, is constructed of English bond orange brick with terracotta dressings and a Marley tile roof. The building has a T-shaped plan and a symmetrical gabled front facing the road, extending over two storeys and three bays. A brick plinth supports a moulded and dentilated cornice. The end bays are two-storey canted bays with hipped roofs, each featuring single lancet windows. The central section is framed by tall buttresses topped with triangular finials, and features an ornately moulded band at the first floor level. The upper storey has a triple two-light pointed arched window, incorporating simple plate tracery and a continuous label mould. Below this, single lancet windows flank a gabled doorcase with buttresses and terracotta detailing. The moulded two-centred arched doorway has wooden panelled doors with strap hinges and cusped details. The side bays are divided by buttresses and have double lancet windows, topped with a bold cornice.

Inside, the entrance leads into a porch with a gallery and staircase to the right. Giant pointed arched recesses frame the pairs of windows. Terracotta detailing and a cornice are visible. The roof structure comprises arch-braced tiebeam and collar trusses with cross braces. All fittings are made from grained pine. A gallery of tiered seats is present. A raised central pulpit features floral panels to the front and pierced balustrades to the side, and a Gothic rail encloses the holy table. Pointed arched entrances with pierced tympana are located on either side. The church retains its original pews.
