Description
The Horse Bridge over the river, located 250 meters southwest of Dutton Lock, is a footbridge built in 1915 by engineer A. Saver for the Weaver Navigation Trust. This bridge features two long segmental arches made of laminated timber that support a slightly arched footway, which is reinforced by triangulated timber strutting. It has plain post-and-rail parapets, concrete springers, and brick abutments topped with weathered concrete copings. This elegant structure exemplifies the functional design typical of waterways from that period. It is one of the earliest surviving examples of a pre-stressed laminated timber structure, with the arches spanning 100 feet 7 inches and 101 feet 7 inches. Working drawings and a colored elevation from 1915 can be found at the BWB Office on Navigation Road in Northwich.
