Description
No. 20 High Street is a house that was formerly known as Saracen's Head Farmhouse. It dates from the early 17th century and was likely re-dressed around the 1900s. The exterior features pebbledash on a red sandstone plinth, with oak-framed gable ends that have plaster panels. The rear wing is partly oak-framed and partly recased, with a small brick extension. The roof is made of grey slate.
The entrance has a framed and boarded door, and there is a moulded timber band at the first floor level. Each storey has two windows with three 2-pane lights that project from the wall and have miniature hipped shingle roofs. The house has a central ridge chimney and another chimney within the frame of the left gable, positioned behind the ridge.
Inside, the layout follows a lobby-entrance plan. There is an inglenook fireplace behind the lobby in the right room, featuring a cambered oak bressumer with an ovolo-stopped chamfer. The interior includes massive chamfered oak beams, oak joists, and oak wall-framing with large, closely spaced posts in the rear wing. Shaped oak brackets at the junction of the front and rear wings include one with a female figure from around 1600. There are corner fireplaces in the front left rooms, and doors from around 1700 with 2, 3, and 6 panels. Some floors are made of oak boards, and there are elements of Arts and Crafts Movement door furniture typical of the Arley estate, along with some HL hinges. The staircase has been altered and features Georgian balusters. Overall, the interior is of good quality.
