Description

No. 16 High Street is a post office and village shop with living accommodation, built around 1870 for Rowland Egerton Warburton, and it features some elements that may be older. The building is constructed of brown brick in English garden wall bond and has a clay tile roof with a steeply-pitched gable facing the street. It has two storeys plus an attic.

The shop window on the ground floor is small and has wood mullions with four 2-pane lights, each topped with a half-round plaster panel. On the second storey, there is a 3-light brick-mullioned leaded casement window. A decorative brick corbel-band consisting of six courses runs along the eaves. The attic contains a 1950s metal casement window that has been inserted. The gable features blue-brick diapering, and there is a large lateral chimney on the left side, which was formerly part of a bakehouse. The shop entrance is located at the right end of the building.

This structure is designed as a crosswing to the adjacent cottages, Nos. 17 and 18, and reflects Warburton's encouragement for his architects to maintain the lively and informal rhythm of the village street. The interior was not accessible for inspection. The building is included for its group value with the surrounding structures.
