Description

Sandilands Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse constructed of English garden wall bond brown brickwork, with a grey slate roof. The building is two storeys plus attics, originally with two windows. A flush sandstone plinth runs along the base. The front door has been replaced, and the windows are mostly replaced 6-pane casements from the 19th century, set within cambered gauged brick arches and have projecting stone cills. Brick chimneys project from the gables. A recessed 19th-century wing was built as a cheesery on the left side. The right gable has two casements to the first storey and one each to the second storey and the attic. The left wing has a larger replaced window to the lower storey and a two-light casement to the upper storey; a window gives access to both the lower and upper landings, with two small casements serving the attic. Studded broad-board doors are hung on smithy-made long hinges. The interior retains oak beams and joists throughout. Broad-board, painted doors are fitted with HL hinges. A dogleg staircase, likely of oak, leads to the upper storey and attic, featuring a deeply moulded rail, simple square newels, stick balusters (with one in two removed), borrowed lights to the attic, and massive oak purlins.
