Description

12A Shipgate Street is a town house that has been partly converted into flats. It was likely built in the late 18th century and altered around 1970. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brown brick and features a grey slate roof that is hipped at the south-west end. It stands three storeys tall and has a double-fronted design, with the end facing St Mary's Hill.

The front of the house has a flush two-storey sandstone plinth and three replaced steps leading to a door with four fielded panels above two flush panels, all set in a simple repaired pedimented case. On either side of the door, there are nearly flush 12-pane sash windows with painted stone sills and rusticated wedge lintels. A sill band runs along the second storey, which also has three sashes similar to those on the first storey. The third storey features three 9-pane sashes in openings that resemble those on the second storey. A ridge chimney is present on the roof.

At the south corner, there are eight courses of bevelled flush sandstone quoins, along with a stone corbel that supports a square brick corner above. The second and third storeys have brick floor-bands, and there is a nearly flush 9-pane sash on each storey. The rear of the building has been reordered to serve as the entrance to a court of late 20th-century flats. The interior has not been inspected.
