Description
Mickerdale Cottage is a cottage and attached shippon built around 1860, possibly by James Harrison for Robert Barbour. It is constructed from rock-faced pink sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof with one stone ridge chimney. The building has an H-shaped plan and presents a 1 and 2-storey, 3-bay front. The left end bay projects under a gable with stone coping and kneelers. There is a chamfered plinth and a 4-light stone-mullioned window below, with a 2-light window above under a hood mould. The central bay includes a 1-storey arcade with three chamfered, 4-centred arched entrances, which are now partly bricked up with iron casements. The right end bay features a coped gable with kneelers above a large cross-shaped loophole, with circular ends that serve as ventilators. Inside, the cottage has a 2-room plan, while the barn consists of a stable with a loft above at the front and a 2-stall shippon at the rear. This is an interesting and late example of a dual-purpose cottager's unit treated in a decorative style.
