Description
No. 1 and 2 The Green are a pair of estate cottages built in 1844 for George Walmesley, featuring 20th-century alterations to the windows. The cottages are constructed from buff sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and have three stone chimneys with octagonal stacks. They are two stories high with a symmetrical five-bay front. The cottages have a hammer-dressed plinth and raised quoins. The central bay projects under a bulbous-coped gable supported by kneelers. There are two mid-hinged windows divided by a mullion and set beneath a label mould, with a single window above. A diamond-shaped cusped light is located in the gable. The end bays have similar windows, while the second and fourth bays feature projecting porches with four-centred arched entrances and half-glazed doors behind. The end gables also have bulbous coping. These cottages were originally part of a terrace of nine, which was described as being in the Swiss style by a contemporary directory.
