Description
The Hoole Village War Memorial is a wayside memorial dedicated in 1923 and designed by architect F. Davies, MSA. It is made of ashlar sandstone and features a Latin Cross set on a square plinth with recessed panels, some of which have relief decoration. The plinth is positioned on a hexagonal two-stepped base that is set forward of a low ashlar masonry wall, which was added in 1949 to honor those who fell in World War II. The inscription on the cross plinth reads: "IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HOOLE AND NEWTON WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. MEN OF PEACE, THEY WAXED VALIANT IN WAR AND WON A VICTORY TO BE USED BY GOD'S HELP FOR THE PEACE OF THE WORLD AND FOR THE WELFARE OF ALL MEN. EASTER DAY 1923." The ashlar wall includes an inscribed panel that states: "THIS MEMORIAL RECORDS THE NAMES OF THE MEN OF HOOLE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-45 (NAMES) AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."
