Description
The footpath guidepost, located 130 meters north-west of Substation Cottages, dates from the late 19th century. It is an octagonal cast-iron post with a plinth, a moulded cap, and a ball finial. The finger plate, which has nicked corners, features a raised inscription that reads:
"WIRRAL FOOTPATH ETC SOCIETY
PUBLIC FOOTPATH TO
UPTON
PLEASE KEEP TO THE PATH"
The National Footpath Preservation Society, established in 1884 with the support of the Duke of Westminster and others, likely erected this guidepost and similar ones throughout the Wirral shortly thereafter.
