Description
Wrexham Road Farmhouse and Farmbuildings, built in 1880, was designed by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster. The structure features stone-dressed brown brick with half-timbered dormer gables for the haylofts and red tile roofs. The farmhouse is a symmetrical 2½ storey, 3 bay design with the central bay projecting. It has Flemish gables topped with balls at the eaves, a moulded string at the first floor, tall shaped brick chimneys, and a stone-dressed doorway with three panels above, topped by a drip-mould. The entrance includes a 6-panel door and iron casements in large stone-mullioned openings, although the leaded glazing has been removed. A covered passage on the right connects the house to the farm buildings, while a later conservatory on the left is in keeping with the overall design. Inside, there are 6-panel doors and a closed string staircase.
The farm buildings are arranged around a three-sided courtyard and consist of two and one storey structures with steep roofs. They include two drifthouses located at the entrance and back of the yard, both featuring oak-framed gables supported by brackets from stone corbels. An octagonal stair turret is topped with a small, spired, boarded dovecote. The buildings have mullioned windows and boarded doors, and they encompass shippons, haylofts, a barn, a cartshed, and stabling. This site is a notable example of Douglas' model farms for the 1st Duke of Westminster.
