Description
Eccleston Hill Lodge, including the gatehouse and attached storeshed and domestic offices, was built between 1881 and 1882 by John Douglas for the 1st Marquis of Westminster. The structure features stone-dressed red brick with blue diapering on the gatehouse, a banded stone lower storey, and a close-studded oak-framed upper storey on the lodge wing to the right. It has red tile roofs and shaped brick chimneys. The three-storey spired gatehouse includes corner turrets, a rib-vaulted carriage archway with two bays in the Early English style, and carved stone armorial panels. There is also a conical-roofed staircase turret. The gatehouse and lodge have mullioned windows made of stone and oak, all featuring patterned leaded glazing in iron casements. Ornate wrought iron gates lead to the main archway and the lodge porch, accompanied by decorative lamp brackets and lanterns. The lodge has an arched framed and boarded oak door. The stone walls of the yard and outbuildings to the right of the lodge contribute to the overall composition. Inside, there is an oak spiral staircase that runs through the full height of the building, with oak doors, mostly six-panelled. A large upper room in the tower features a grand Tudor-style fireplace. This gatehouse is notable for its impressive scale, picturesque massing, and rich detailing.
