Description
Eccleston Paddocks is a house built in 1883 by John Douglas as a residence for Cecil Parker, the nephew of the 1st Duke of Westminster's Eaton agent. The building features snecked red sandstone at the base and blue diapered red brick with stone bands and decorative elements above. It has a steep, hipped main roof covered in red tiles, complete with lead finials and a large central chimney. The house stands 2½ storeys tall with a basement.
The entrance front, facing north, includes a prominent staircase bay window with mullions and transoms above an arched entrance that features a 16-panel oak door with wrought iron hinges and handle. To the right is a truncated service wing, while the east front is symmetrical, highlighted by cone-roofed corner turrets on battered plinths. The south, or garden front, showcases two projecting, shaped gables. The windows are shaped, stone-dressed, and feature mullions and transoms with metal casements; leaded glazing is present on the entrance front and some upper windows.
Inside, the house boasts a massive open well newel staircase made of oak, an oak overmantel in the hall, a moulded plaster ceiling, and a hardwood fireplace surround in the drawing room. The ceilings are oak and plaster panelled, and there are fine hardwood double 3-panel doors.
This impressive small chateau reflects the pride and exacting standards of its original owner.
