Description
The former Albion Hotel is a range of former shops and attached dwellings, now used as offices. It was built in the mid to late 19th century, with some minor alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings and has a slate roof.
The principal corner range consists of 10 bays and stands three storeys tall, with a four-bay, two-storey range to the left, which is No. 75. This section features a convex facade facing the crossroads, with five glazing bar sash windows, each having six over six panes under segmental arch-headed lintels with keyblocks. Above these are simpler nine-pane sashes. Nos. 71 and 75 to the right have four sashes beneath grooved wedge lintels. There are sill bands on the first and second floors, and a wide timber eaves band at the window heads.
The late 19th-century shop fronts are notable, particularly No. 75, which has a stuccoed pilaster doorcase at the centre, complete with a plain semi-circular fanlight and a segmental hood. The two-storey section facing Wallworths Bank has an arched cart entry to the right, followed by an inserted 20th-century shop front. Further left are two stepped single bays, each with a semi-circular headed doorway featuring a four-pane door and flanking sash window; one has a six over six pane window, while the other lacks glazing bars. There is a first-floor sill band and four first-floor windows, including three sashes and one coupled sash without glazing bars at the left-hand end.
