Description

Quarry Bank House is a house built in 1797 for Samuel Greg, with some mid-19th century additions. It features washed roughcast brick on a stone plinth, a hipped Welsh slate roof, and four brick chimneys. The east front is two stories high with three bays and has a moulded wooden cornice. The upper windows are four-pane sashes set in semi-circular headed recesses. The right end bay has a 12-pane sash, while the left end bay features a similar window in a later projection. There is a central detached porch supported by fluted columns, topped with a tented glass roof. The fluted doorcase includes half-glazed panels and a door with a semi-circular fanlight adorned with radial glazing bars. The west front is two stories over a basement and has a central two-story curving bay window.

Inside, the house opens into a rectangular hall with curved corners and four five-panelled mahogany doors, two of which are curved. The room to the left features a fireplace with a shouldered architrave, blue tiles, and a stained glass panel displaying the Greg arms. The room to the right has a classical fireplace made of white and grey marble, decorated with urns and a central plaque depicting a nymph reclining on a cornucopia, along with a later graffito of a sailing ship. The staircase has plain balusters, a mahogany handrail, and a bracketed open string.
