Description

The Packhorse Bridge is a footbridge over the River Bollin, built in 1820 by John Mellor of Rainow for Samuel Greg. It features bossed pink sandstone and has a single segmental arch supported by low piers. The bridge carries a narrow footway with a heavy rounded coping, which stands on ten rough piers to create an open parapet. An inscription reading "J Mellor 1820" is located under the arch on the east side. This bridge is similar to others on the estate and near the mill, but it is only matched in quality by the bridge in the Northern Woods and is the only dated example.
