Description
George Street Mill is a disused silk mill located in Macclesfield, built in 1872 with extensions added in 1885. The structure is made of brick with a low stone plinth and a Welsh slate roof. It features an internal framework of cast-iron columns that support timber beams. The mill is three storeys high and has an L-shaped plan, with the main range facing George Street consisting of 13 windows, and a six-window return to the courtyard on the south side. The windows are mostly 16-pane with top opening vents, flat-arched stone heads, and continuous stone sill bands. A moulded cornice runs along the top.
An added toilet block connects the original mill to the later extension from 1885, which is four storeys tall and has an 11-window range. This extension includes large windows on the ground floor for the weaving shed, which continues into a single-storey range of three bays to the east. The upper windows in this section are nine-pane. There is a doorway at the foot of the stairs on the right side, with loading doors to the left of the George Street elevation.
Historically, the development of the George Street Mill site signifies a transition from traditional construction methods to those used in the early 20th century, as the 1885 extensions were designed to accommodate powered Jacquard weaving.
