Description
Wright's Almshouses, located at 1425 London Road, were built in 1638 by Sir Edmund Wright, who was the Lord Mayor of London in 1641. This structure consists of a block of six cottages, each two storeys high. The building is constructed of brick and features stone long and short quoins, a moulded string course, and quoined surrounds for the windows and doors. The gable copings are topped with ball feet, and there are six iron casement windows with stone mullions and jambs, which have restored leaded lights, although many are now broken. The cottages also have six batten doors with moulded joints that have been restored. The roof is tiled and features good brick stacks. A carved stone panel at the centre displays arms and a partly defaced inscription. When inspected, the building was unoccupied and in urgent need of repair, with plans proposed to dismantle it and re-erect it at Crewe's Almshouses in Beam Street.
