Description

The tunnel under the Macclesfield Canal is a canal tunnel built in 1830 by William Crosley, who was the engineer for the Macclesfield Canal Company. It opened in November 1831. The tunnel is constructed of ashlar stone. The south portal features a round arched entrance with a plain raised keystone, and above it is a plain ashlar band. The portal abutments are slightly splayed and also have plain ashlar coping. The round arched tunnel extends approximately 15 meters to the north. The north portal no longer exists, and the tunnel is currently blocked. This tunnel is an important functional element of the Macclesfield Canal.
