702/0/10033 Tunnel under Macclesfield Canal 26-MAR-04

GV II Canal tunnel. 1830. Built by William Crosley, engineer to the Macclesfield Canal Company, opened in November 1831. Ashlar. South tunnel portal has round arched entrance with plain raised keystone. Above plain ashlar band. Portal abutments are slightly splayed again with plain ashlar coping. The round arched tunnel stretches approxiamately 15 meters north. The north portal no longer survives, and the tunnel is now blocked. This tunnel forms an essential functional element of the Macclesfield Canal. SJ8666362190
