Description

The Nantwich War Memorial is situated on the High Street, at the western edge of the grounds of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I listed building, and is surrounded by several other listed buildings in a public area. This memorial takes the form of a stone Calvary cross, standing approximately 4 meters tall. At the top, a hood shelters a carved crucifixion. The cross head rises from a heavily moulded collar on an octagonal shaft, which features sculptural elements including a bust of the Virgin Mary.

The cross shaft is mounted on an octagonal plinth with a simple cornice. Each side of the plinth displays a polished granite plaque. The front plaque bears the dedication: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NANTWICH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." The other seven plaques list the names of those who were killed in the First World War in alphabetical order, with four of these names also carved into the faces of the plinth's base.

The plinth is supported by a three-stepped octagonal base. On the middle step, three grey granite tablets commemorate those who died in the Second World War. The dedicatory tablet reads "1939 – 1945," while the two larger tablets on either side record the names of 44 individuals, including three women. Additionally, two servicemen who died from injuries in 1946 are also noted on the third tablet.
