Description
41 High Street is a late 16th-century building, featuring a carved inscription dated 1584. It is timber-framed with plaster infilling and stands three storeys high plus an attic. The building has a gabled end facing the street and an overhang on each storey supported by contemporary brackets that are carved with human faces and other designs. The first storey is adorned with two early Renaissance style fluted pilasters that have carved capitals. There are 19th-century canted oriel windows and ash windows on either side, along with tiles on the exterior. A modern shop front has been added. There is also a contemporary wooden panel inscribed with the words: "God grante our Royal Queen in England and long to raign for she hath put her helping hand to bild this town again." Notably, Matthew Henry, a celebrated Nonconformist preacher, died here in 1714.
