Description
No. 46 High Street is a building dating from the 16th to 17th century. It features a timber frame and has been restored with black and white plaster. The building has two storeys plus an attic, with two gables facing the street that have restored barge boards. The attics overhang, and there is a prominent gabled end on the side facing Castle Street, which includes two bold overhangs supported by corbels carved with human figures and animals. The building has two 8-light wood mullioned and transomed casement windows, likely from the 17th century, with leaded lights. The first-floor room on the left side of the front retains some original panelling and enriched plasterwork. It was probably constructed after the Great Fire of 1585. Nos. 42 to 52 (even) form a group with this building.
