Description
The Old House at Birtles Farm is a 17th-century farmhouse, later altered in the early 19th century. It is now used as a shed. The building is timber framed, with some areas featuring wattle and daub infill and others brick nogging, set on a sandstone plinth. The south wall has been rebuilt in English garden wall bond orange brick. The roof is now covered with asbestos sheeting, replacing what was originally thatch, and features a brick ridge chimney. The north front has five small, 2-over-2 timber frame windows with angle bracing of the wall plate. The east gable shows an upper cruck truss and a 2-light iron casement window with lattice-leaded glazing. The south front incorporates cambered brick window heads. A lean-to addition to the west end is constructed in brick and has a Kerridge stone-slate roof. The interior comprises a two-room plan, with chamfered ceiling beams featuring flat stops. A simple stair is located near the central fireplace, which now contains a Victorian iron range.
