Description

The Church of St Catherine, built in 1840 for Thomas Hibbert and becoming a parish church in 1890, is a Grade II* listed building. It features English garden wall bond red brick with buff sandstone dressings and a Kerridge stone-slate roof with a stone ridge. The church has a 5-bay nave, a short chancel, a south porch, and a south-west tower. The nave's bays are separated by buttresses and include mullioned and transomed windows with round-headed upper lights. The gabled south porch is supported by octagonal buttresses with crocketted pinnacles and features a 4-centred headed doorcase adorned with coats of arms in the spandrels, along with a heavy studded and panelled, grained door. A date stone is positioned above the porch. A similar projection on the north side houses the baptistery. The chancel is supported by diagonal buttresses and has a 3-light east window with intersecting tracery. The 3-stage octagonal tower features a 4-centred arched doorcase with the initials "TH" in Lombardic script in the spandrels, single lights above, and stone bands at each stage. The tower is topped with a lattice, openwork stone balustrade and plain pinnacles.

Inside, the church is fitted with 16th and 17th-century Netherlandish or German woodwork, including an arcaded panelled organ screen and baptistery. An ornate pulpit dated 1686, an early eagle lectern, and a family pew with a readers desk made from carved pieces are also present. The church contains good Netherlandic stained glass, some of which dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The nave roof features arch-braced king post trusses with tracery in the spaces.
