Description
This barn, located 22 meters behind Higher House Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century, with additions around 1700 and some alterations in the 20th century. It features a combination of timber framing with brick nogging and sections built of English garden wall bond brick on a stone plinth. The roof is covered with Kerridge stone-slate and has a stone ridge, and the barn has an L-shaped plan.
The north range consists of a four-bay barn with walls made of regular small timber frames and angle bracing at the wall plate. The gables include circular brick pitchholes, and there is a large cart entrance on the south face. Inside, the roof trusses have an angle-braced tiebeam supported by two queen posts and a collar, with lower purlins that are windbraced.
The east range is constructed of brick with stone quoins and features an external staircase at the south end, which leads to a gable that has a six-hole pigeon cote. At the rear, there are three windows with brick hood moulds, one of which retains a surviving mullion. The front openings have been altered, and inside, the roof trusses consist of a tiebeam with two pairs of diagonal struts.
