Description

The Stanley Obelisk is a notable structure dated 1750, commissioned by Sir Edward Stanley. It is made of buff sandstone and features a square base set on a moulded plinth. The south-west face of the base bears the inscription "MDCCL ERECTED BY SIR EDWARD STANLEY BART." Above the base, a projecting moulded shelf supports a very tall, tapering octagonal pillar that culminates in a pointed top. Atop this pillar is a ball that supports the Stanley family's spread eagle emblem.
