Description

Eagle and Child Cottage is a building that originally served as a farmhouse, later becoming an inn, and is now a house. It dates from the 17th century, with a later 17th-century outshut and guttering dated 1688, and a west range added in the later 18th century. The building has an L-shaped plan. The north range is timber framed with brick nogging, set on a sandstone plinth, and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and three brick chimneys. It is two stories high with a two-bay north front. The small framing includes small panelling under the upper windows. The left bay has a board door in a bead-moulded doorcase and a five-light wood mullioned window with lattice leaded glazing, situated under a coved overhang in a gabled half dormer that has herringboning in the gable. The right bay steps forward under a gable and features a five-light chamfered wood mullioned window with lattice leaded glazing below and a similar three-light window with rectangular lead glazing above. An outshut, added to the rear, is constructed in timber framing, and the black painted lead guttering reads "TD 1688."

Inside, the cottage has bead-moulded ceiling beams and a cyma-moulded stone corner fireplace, along with large cellars accessed by a stone flight of steps. The west range is built in washed English garden wall bond brick, with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and two brick chimneys. The right four bays were once a separate house and feature segmental rough brick heads above two-light wooden casements. To the left is a former coachhouse that has been converted into a garage and conservatory. This range is connected to the other by a single-storey passage.
