Description

Beech Cottages is a pair of cottages built in the mid-18th century, with later alterations and additions from the late 18th century and 20th century. They are constructed from painted coursed rubble sandstone and red brick, featuring central and gable ridge chimney stacks, and are topped with a plain tile roof. The cottages are two storeys high, each with two bays.

The cottage on the north-west side, known as Higher Beech Cottage, has two three-light flush mullioned windows on each storey and a doorway that is enclosed by a 20th-century porch. It has a gable stack at the north-west end and a shared central stack. The north-west gable displays an exposed queen post roof truss with angle struts.

The south-east cottage, simply called Beech Cottage, now has brick walls and a brick band above the ground floor window heads. It features stacked four-light mullioned windows in each bay, with the ground floor windows set beneath nearly flat soldier arches. There is a 20th-century pitched roof porch at the south-east end. The rear elevation has windows of matching form and size, while the south-east gable includes a ground floor six-over-six pane sash window.

The interiors have not been inspected but are likely to contain interesting features. These cottages illustrate the transition in building materials from stone to brick and the shift from local vernacular styles to more refined architectural detailing.
