Description
The wing walls, railings, gate piers, and gates at Mottram Hall Hotel were constructed around 1750 for William Wright, although the wing walls were likely rebuilt in the 19th century. They are made of buff sandstone and feature wrought iron gates and railings. There are two low, curving wing walls topped with weathered copings that support spear railings. These walls end in chamfered rusticated piers set on moulded plinths, each topped with a ball finial on a projecting capstone. The main gate piers are larger and have more ornate finials. They support the side gates, which have curving tops, spear elements, speared dog bars, and a St. Andrew's brace featuring Apollo's head at the crossing. The pair of carriage gates is similar in design but longer.
