Description
Keeper's Close is an early 17th-century farmhouse, later used as a gamekeeper’s house and now a house. It has been altered and extended in the 18th century and 20th century. The house is built of red brick in an English garden wall bond, with a sandstone plinth. The roof is covered with Kerridge stone-slates, and there are stone ridge and gable brick chimneys.
The building has a rectangular plan and a four-bay front. The end bays are gabled, with three-light casement windows and three-light stone mullion windows. The upper windows retain some original leaded glazing. A gabled brick porch has been added to the left of centre, concealing a door, with a three-light stone mullion window above the porch. To the right of the porch are a three-light casement window and a three-light stone mullioned window. A small, sympathetic addition was built in the 20th century.
The house’s plan is typical of late 16th and early 17th-century farms on the Mottram estate. It may originally have had timber framing.
