Description
Higher Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, featuring early and later 18th century brickwork on the facade and some 20th century alterations. The building is partly timber framed and partly constructed of brick in three phases, with one section displaying purple headers, all set on a stone plinth. It has a composition tile roof and two brick chimneys. The house has an H-plan rectangular shape with an internal cross-passage behind the stack and a two-storey, five-bay front. The gabled end bays contain three-light wooden casements with applied lattice-leaded glazing below and two lights above, all featuring flat wedged brick heads. There is a 20th century framed and boarded door with a similar head. The right end and rear gables display timber small framing with angle bracing of the wall plate and truss of the tiebeam, along with two lattice-leaded casements and a boarded door with iron strap hinges.
Inside, the farmhouse has timber-framed partition walls and a massive central ashlar stack with a chamfered cambered fire beam. The parlour features a chamfered and flat stopped ceiling beam, some 17th century wainscotting, and a six-panelled cellar door.
This farmhouse is a typical example of a Mottram estate farm, with Keeper's Close being another noted example.
