Description
Brantwood is a cottage dating to 1831, as indicated by a stone tablet on the first floor. It incorporates a probable mid-18th century Bridewell (a former house of correction). The cottage is built of red brick with a roof of large slates. It has two storeys and three bays, with mainly two-light flush casement windows, featuring stone sills and cambered arches on the ground floor. A modern, fully glazed front door is set within its original frame, which has a transome light with glazing bars. A monopitch porch has been added externally, and there are gable end stacks.
The interior of the cottage includes the Bridewell, which forms the entrance hall. The Bridewell is constructed of sandstone, measuring 4 metres by 2 metres. It features an opening in the south wall with two vertical iron rods, a rebated door opening with hinge blocks and lock-keep, and holes in the side walls that supported a bed or seat beam. The cottage is listed primarily for the interest of this almost complete lock-up.
