Description

The Chantry House, originally built in 1527 as a chantry house and later used as a school house, is now a private dwelling. It features a timber frame with plastered panels and a slate roof, standing two storeys high with three window bays. The building has a sandstone plinth and very close studding, with rails only where necessary for the window sills and heads on the facade, while the east gable is jettied without rails. Large curved tension braces extend from the ground sill, and equally large arch bracing reaches up to the wall plate. The windows have been replaced with transom and mullion designs featuring leaded glazing, and the entrance door has also been replaced. An added wing on the south side is of no particular interest.

Inside, the house showcases deeply bevelled beams and flat bevelled joists in the medieval style. There are four stone fireplaces, each with massive lintels carved with chamfered Tudor arches. Some internal framing includes a middle rail, and there are two sections of original oak panelling with doors at the first-floor level; one of these doors retains its original old hinges. The underside of the roof was originally visible from the first-floor rooms, but a lightweight ceiling has since been inserted. The building is graded II* for the quality of its framing throughout.
