Description

Church Cottage, The Crest, Trelawn, Rose Cottage, and Widow's Cottage are a group of five cottages from the Peckforton Estate, built in 1874, as indicated by a metal plaque at first floor level. They are constructed of brown brick with a blue tiled roof. The three central cottages are two storeys tall and consist of two bays each, while the end units are single storey with lean-to bays. A single storey lean-to with a slate roof runs the full length of the group at the rear and connects the end bays under hipped roof returns. At the back, the former privies have been adapted for modern use. The front doors are set in recessed openings with Tudor arches and feature false strap hinges and beads that divide them into seven vertical panels. The ground floor has 3-light casements with single glazing bars. One bay in each of the three middle cottages is set forward and gabled, showcasing timber framing in the apex, exposed purlin ends, and a finial. The first floor plaque displays a horse's head and wing, St Andrew's Cross superimposed on a diamond, along with the inscription "confido conquiesco" and the date. The cottages also feature four-flue diagonally set chimney stacks.
