Description
The chapel in St Peter's Churchyard dates back to around 1150 but was rebuilt and restored in 1747 for Sir William Meredith. It is constructed of buff sandstone with a roof made of Kerridge stone-slate. The chapel features a simple two-bay nave and a lower one-bay chancel. The west doorway retains elements from the 12th century, including a pair of columns with scrolled capitals that support three semi-circular arches decorated with raised heads, zigzags, and pellets. Above the doorway, there is a tympanum that displays a worn figure of Christ in Majesty above a pair of studded oak doors.
Above the corbel table, there are seven now-defaced figures believed to represent the Trinity, St Peter, Richard I, and figures symbolizing church and state. A plaque in a rusticated surround records the restoration in Latin, noting that the ancient chapel, which had fallen into disrepair, was restored at the expense of G.M.B. in 1747. The chapel features an elliptical light in the gable, a simple plinth around its base, and two round-headed lights in the nave along with one in the chancel. The east window is circular.
Inside, the windows are set in slight embrasures. There is a rebated semi-circular chancel arch leading up three steps to the raised chancel, which contains an altar table in a semi-circular headed recess. Additionally, there are three further Latin plaques in the chancel and one above the nave door that refer to the reconstruction.
