Description
The lychgate and west wall of St Peter's Churchyard, located in Prestbury, were originally dated 1715 but were re-erected in 1728, with walls added in 1765. Constructed from buff sandstone with a Kerridge stone-slate roof and stone ridge, the lychgate has a rectangular shape with solid side walls and clasping end pilasters. Its stone-coped gabled roof features crocketted pinnacles. Inside, there are two plaques: one on the south side states, "This Building was Erected Ano Dom 1715 Robert Brough, Richard Sandbach, George Taylor, Nathaniel Bunnel Church Wardens," while the north plaque reads, "This Portal was removed and newly Erected & the Stone Walk adjoining laid & the Hearse House Built Anno Dom.1728 Saml.Harryman, Thos. Mottershead, Adam Slack, Edmund Massey Church Wardens." The lychgate now includes a pair of 20th-century wooden gates. Ashlar walls extend from either side of the lychgate, topped with rounded coping. There are gateways near each end, accessed by flights of four sweeping steps, and simple gate piers, although the original gates are no longer present.
