Description
Nos 1 to 5 Pillory Street is a building completed in 1911, designed by architect E H Edleston of Edleston & Bower. This corner block features an unusual design influenced by late 17th-century French architecture. It is constructed of red brick and consists of two storeys plus a double attic. The façade has a window arrangement of 4+3+8, with the three windows located in the rounded corner. All windows are four-light mullioned and transomed casements with keyblocks. There are two ranges of circular dormers with cornices, and the lower range has heavy festooned stucco aprons with a deep stuccoed band below. The shop windows are divided by pilasters and have semi-circular heads with small-paned glazing, while those flanking the entrance are square-headed. The entrance is located on the corner and features a pilaster doorcase with a shallow pediment. The steep roof is covered with small slates and is topped at the corner by a concave spirelet with a ball-headed mast. Nos 1 to 5 form a group with Nos 4, 8, and 10 Hospital Street.
