Description

A row of five weavers' houses dating to circa 1840, located on Chapel Street, Macclesfield. The buildings are constructed of brick with a slate roof. They are three storeys high and feature varied plans adapted to the corner site, including one dwelling with a two-unit, single-range layout, and four dwellings with a single-unit, double-pile plan. Number 55, the two-unit house, has a central entrance framed by an architrave with exaggerated console brackets supporting an entablature, and a blind window above. The flanking windows are 12-pane sashes with shallow brick arched heads. The other houses have round-arched entrances with blind tympana. A shallow 19th-century bow window is present in Number 57, while the other glazing has been renewed within the original window openings. The rear elevation features long, small-paned workshop windows in the attic storey. A passageway to the rear is located in the centre of the row. The terrace has axial and end wall stacks, including two on the front wall. A moulded wooden eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. The interior is not included in the listing.
