Description

The building occupied by J.R. Bridgeford, Estate Agents, Williams and Glyn's Bank, and the Library was originally a school and schoolmaster's house. The school was established in 1721, and the master's house was built in 1751, with some 20th-century alterations. The structure features washed brick with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, a stone ridge, and two brick chimneys. It has a T-shaped plan, is two stories tall, and has a five-bay front. The left three bays sit on a slight plinth and have a brick band at the first floor. There are four tall, three-light chamfered stone mullions and a studded 20th-century board door. The fourth bay projects on wooden piers and includes a large window with glazing bars. The right end bay contains two 20th-century windows and a plaque that reads, "The Gift of Charles Legh of Adlington Esq. to ye Master (for ye time being) of ye .....oming Free School at Prestbury A.D, 1751." The left gable features a plaque stating, "This School was Erected in ye year of our Lord 1721 and Endowed by Ann Whittakers Late of Prestbury who left £100 ye interest thereof for the Promotion of a Schoolmaster to teach ten of the poorest Children in the Township of Prestbury from the Primer to ye Bible at ye Discretion of the Executors and ye Overseers of the Poor of ye said Township."
