3/9 Forecourt walls and gate piers before at Arley Hall (south front) -

Forecourt walls and gate piers. c1850. 2 1/2 sides of rectangle joined to south-east corner of house and spur of roughly triangular shape. Red Flemish bond brick with blue brick diapering and stone coping. Stone base. Stone piers to east side with diamond-pointed rustication with ball and spike finials. Piers in centre of south wall with sunken panels and lozenges. Short piers above with strap ornament and large, squashed consoles to sides. Originally these piers ended in elaborate finials which have now been reduced. Walls project beyond here southwards as parapets to a bridge over the ha-ha. Triangular spur has gate to south west wall leading to furlong walk. Stone piers of diamond-pointed rustication with ball and spike finials.
