Description
The forecourt walls and gate piers at Arley Hall date from around 1850 and form two and a half sides of a rectangle, connecting to the southeast corner of the house and extending into a roughly triangular shape. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with blue brick diapering and feature stone coping. The walls have a stone base, and the stone piers on the east side display diamond-pointed rustication topped with ball and spike finials. The center piers of the south wall have sunken panels and lozenges, with shorter piers above that include strap ornament and large, squashed consoles on the sides. Originally, these piers had elaborate finials, which have since been reduced. The walls extend southward as parapets to a bridge over the ha-ha. The triangular spur includes a gate on the southwest wall leading to a furlong walk, with stone piers that also exhibit diamond-pointed rustication and ball and spike finials.
