Description
Twemlow Viaduct is a railway viaduct built in 1841 by G W Buck, who was the Engineer for the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company. The structure is made of red brick in English Bond and sandstone. It features twenty-three semi-circular arches, each spanning 18 metres, supported by piers that are 3 metres on the face and 8 metres deep. The projecting pier plinths have a weathered vermiculated stone cornice, with the plinths of the two piers closest to the River Dane made entirely of stone and displaying banded rustication. There are ogee moulded stone impost bands, and the arches are constructed with 8 bricks deep, some featuring brick-on-edge rings. A plain stone parapet rests on a projecting two-course deep brick band, which is supported by a cornice made from a chamfered stone band and a massive dentil cornice. The viaduct carries the electrified railway from Manchester to Crewe.
