Description

Free Green Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1720, located on Free Green Lane in Peverel Superior. The house is constructed of red English garden wall bond brick with a slate roof. It is three storeys high. The front elevation has four bays, with square turrets projecting on either side, each capped with a pyramidal roof that aligns with the front facade. The turrets have no windows on this elevation, although the left-hand turret shows evidence of blocked windows on the ground and first floors. Brick bands define the floors. A 20th-century porch, slightly to the left of centre, provides access via a 20th-century glazed door. The ground floor features pairs of two-light casement windows with cambered heads. Matching casement windows are present on the first floor, and five 20th-century two-light casement windows are on the second floor, within openings that were created at that time. A 20th-century extension adjoins the right side of the building. The rear elevation includes a strip staircase window, centrally located, which is now partially bricked up and consists of two two-light casements. Further 19th and 20th-century extensions are present to the rear. Inside, one ground-floor room retains bolection moulded panelling. A panelled arch leads to the staircase hall, which has a dropped keystone. The staircase rises over four flights, featuring panelled newels and a ramped handrail with a deep handrail. Four five-panel doors remain in their original reveals on the first-floor landing.
