Description

Greenthorne is a manufacturer's mansion built in 1860 for James Barlow. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and features a two-span slate roof with cross-gables and various chimneys. It has a rectangular plan, measuring roughly 4 by 3 bays, and stands two and a half storeys high in a free Gothic style, characterized by steeply-pitched roofs and gables, along with some pointed arched doors and windows.

A prominent feature on the asymmetrical left side is a large two-storey porch that rises above the eaves. This porch has bands on two levels, sloped diagonal buttresses on the ground floor that transition into chamfered corners at the first floor, and a triangular-headed moulded doorway offset to the right. Above the doorway, there is a pointed light to the left and a first-floor window with five pointed lights. The porch is topped with a parapet and a hipped monopitched roof that extends into the gable of the stairwell.

To the left of the porch, there is a tall gabled dormer that breaks the eaves, and further along is a gabled crosswing featuring an oriel window at the first floor and an attic window with two pointed lights. On the right side of the building, a tall extruded chimney stack is present. The garden front, which is the right return wall, includes two gables with large first-floor windows. Between these gables, there is a small window with three pointed lights at the first floor. At ground floor level, there is a canted bay window to the right, and the rest of the ground floor is occupied by a large rectangular conservatory with glazed walls and a hipped glazed roof, which is protected by a balustrade. The interior of the building remains largely unaltered.
