Description
39 and 41 King Street are both late 18th century buildings, dated 1778 on the rainwater head. They are constructed of red brick. Number 39 is a wide and impressive town house featuring a central door that is accessed by a double flight of steps with simple railings. It has Ionic three-quarter columns, a decorated block frieze, a modillion cornice, and a broken raked pediment. The ground floor has four new sash windows, while the upper floor has five, all with stone sills and flat brick arches. There is a top moulded cornice, and a pediment in the center contains a round-arched window. To the right, there is a segmental-headed carriage entrance, and the doorway of number 41 features Tuscan three-quarter columns and a simple cornice, also accessed by steps. Number 41 has two sash windows on the ground floor and four on each of the upper floors, which has three storeys, all with flat brick arched lintels. Numbers 33 to 43 form a cohesive group of mainly Georgian character alongside numbers 1 and 3 Princes Street.
