Description

The former south lodge to Mowbray Park, now disused, was built in 1856 by contractor W. Scott. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings, featuring projecting quoins. The roof is made of Welsh slate with decorative fishscale bands and stone gable copings, along with limestone and ashlar chimneys. The lodge is designed in a Tudor style with an irregular plan and is a single storey.

On the south elevation facing the drive, there is one window, with a gabled left wing that breaks forward and a projecting gabled porch on the right. The porch features a chamfered Tudor-arched door with stepped stone voussoirs and the date 1856 incised in the keystone, along with bargeboards. To the left of the porch, there is a window in a stone surround with alternate block jambs.

The right return facing Toward Road has a stone mullioned and transomed three-light window, where the central light is higher, and displays the Borough arms on a stone plaque at the gable peak. The set-back right wing on this elevation has a two-pitch roof over a stone mullion two-light window. The roof is adorned with fishscale decoration, bargeboards on all gables, and an ashlar-corniced ridge chimney.

Mowbray Park is located on Building Hill, where stone was quarried for many of Sunderland's buildings. The Corporation acquired the land from the Mowbray family for £2,000 in 1854, and the grounds were landscaped by the Marquis of Londonderry's gardener, Lawson, with the park officially opening in 1857. At the time of the survey, the windows and doors were blocked, and the building was in a derelict state.
