Description
This is a medieval arch located under a cliff near the south-east corner of Mowbray Park in Sunderland. It is believed to date from the 14th century and is constructed of ashlar stone. The arch features voussoirs that form a moulded pointed shape and has been reset in the cliff at the southern end of the park at an unknown time. Although much of the arch is now buried, old photographs indicate that the entire structure was once visible at this site. It is said to have originated from the old Rectory of Bishopwearmouth, which was associated with the Church of St Michael and was demolished in the 19th century.
