Description
The Church of Our Blessed Lady Immaculate and the adjoining presbytery is a Roman Catholic parish church built between 1877 and 1878 by A.M. Dunn of Newcastle. It is constructed from rock-faced snecked sandstone and features a roof made of plain tiles. The church has a three-bay aisled nave that connects to a one-bay apsed chancel, with a south transept that includes a gable belfry. There is a low north porch leading to the chancel. Designed in the Early English style, the church has two-light windows in the nave, along with one single lancet and two pairs of windows in the aisles. The western bays of the aisles contain two doors flanked by coped gabled buttresses that have niches. The west front features paired lancets in the aisles and a four-light window in the nave, complemented by strings and a central buttress. The straight-sided apse has three paired lancets. The high-pitched roof is topped with an iron cross finial at the west end and a stone finial at the east end. There is a one-storey link to the presbytery near the south transept, built with similar materials. The presbytery is two storeys tall and has a T-plan, designed in a Gothic style with decorated windows and ornamental bargeboards, and features a single coped transverse ridge chimney.
